Over 55's required for "Low Cup" curling teams

The Low Cup was established in 1909, and competed for annually until 1922. After a lapse of 53 years, D.W. Stewart of Renfrew contributed significantly to re-instate this competition. Currently, five clubs compete (Deep River, Pembroke, Renfrew, Arnprior, and Cobden/Eganville). Fifteen meets per year are played round robin, with two teams from each club playing a morning and afternoon game, with total points for the year deciding the winner. Teams are made up of any interested player who is a club member, and over the age of 55. The opportunity to visit other clubs, meet different curlers, and enjoy lunch together between games makes these events highly sought after.

Low Cup Timetable for 2007-2008

Low Cup schedule for 2007 to 2008

Low Cup Rules: (As agreed Sept 13 2006, Cobden)

1. If games must be postponed or cancelled, and notice is not given to the host club in time to cancel catering without cost, then all clubs will contribute equally to cover the costs (e.g. inclement weather, ice plant failure the night before a match).

2. Teams must have a minimum of three players, including two team members representing their original club. Spares MAY be provided by the host club but they are not obliged to do so. This would be done in the interest of avoiding defaulted games, and having a good game. Visiting teams are still responsible for paying the $32 per team for the meal. Spares must throw lead rocks. (A maximum of 1 player can switch from one team to another between first and second games. The switched player shall be treated as a spare, and must play lead.)

3. No Shows, and teams not meeting rule 2, will default. The non-defaulting team will be awarded 9 points, while the team in default will receive 0. If a team knows in advance that they cannot make the scheduled date and can negotiate a makeup date with their opposition, this will be acceptable. However provisions must be made regarding meals provided by the host club on the scheduled date, and to provide scores to the record keeper. This provision should only be invoked for the most drastic reasons because alternate teams should be pulled together from your club membership.

4. Teams arriving late shall be penalized by the loss of one end for each 10 minutes after the scheduled start of play. One point will be posted for the end. This provision may be waived by the non-offending team if lateness is caused by weather, traffic accident, injury or medical emergency.

5. All Players must be 55 years of age or older.
