Low Cup Season Finishes

Amongst the many curling activities that the Deep River club is involved with and that are coming to a close, the Low Cup play for this season has finished.

For those who are not familiar with the Low Cup competition let me describe this activity.

The Low Cup was established in 1909, and competed for annually until 1922. After a lapse of 53 years, D.W. Stewart of Renfrew contributed significantly to re-instate this competition and in 1975 it was restarted.

Currently, five clubs compete (Deep River, Pembroke, Renfrew, Arnprior, and Cobden/Eganville). Fifteen meets per year are played round robin, with two teams from each club playing a morning and afternoon game. The scores for each game are recorded for each club. At the end of the season the total points for the year decide the winner. Teams are made up of any interested player who is a club member, and over the age of 55. The opportunity to visit other clubs, meet different curlers, and enjoy lunch together between games makes these events highly sought after.

On March 21st the Low Cup was played at the Cobden and Eganville clubs. As usual Deep River sent two teams. Deep River teams won 3 1/2 out of 4 gaining 34 1/2 points to win the day.

Deep River 1 (Bob French, George Burton, Bob Tapp, and Charles van Wagner) tied the morning game 6 - 6 against Cobden, and won the second game 9 -5 against Renfrew 1.

Deep River 2 (Chris Knight, Bob Burton, Martin James, John Logie) won over Eganville in the morning game, and won the second game over Arnprior in the afternoon. Arnprior 1 beat Renfrew1 8 - 6 in the first game in Cobden, and lost the second to Cobden 3 - 16 in the afternoon.

Renfrew 2 lost to Arnprior in the first game, and lost the second to Eganville.

Scores for the day: Deep River 34 1/2, Renfrew 14, Arnprior 24 1/2, Cobden/Eganville 31.

On March 28th the final games for Low Cup were played in Pembroke.

Unfortunately, the two Deep River teams did not do as well as they have in the past. Deep River 1 (Bob French, Ken Cotnam, Bob Tapp, John Davies) lost both matches to Pembroke 5 - 8, and 1 - 17. Deep River 2 (Ken Deugau, Martin James, George Burton, Dave Spencer) lost the first game to Pembroke 1, 3 - 7, and won the second against Pembroke 2, 9 - 2. As a result, Deep River finished the day with 19 1/2 pts to add to their total and end the season.

Arnprior won 2 of 4 games against Cobden and Eganville. This gave them 29 points on the day,

Arnprior's total points, at the end of the day were 360 ½ points. Renfrew, on the other hand, who had a bye that day, finished with 361 points, just a ½ point more than Arnprior but enough to allow them to retain the cup for another year. Pembroke won the day with 32 1/2 points, and retained third place in the standings with 308 1/2 pts.

Deep River finished fourth with 276 pts. Cobden/Eganville trailed with 255 pts. All in all this was the closest finish in years!

Schoolhouse Museum Draw

There were ten winners in the fundraising raffle for the Schoolhouse Museum. The draw took place on March 8th. The winners were Julian Bayley, Ken Cotnam, George Burton, Tammy Aranyosi, Hugh Taylor, Helen McCarthy, Kathy Amunds, Chris Trotter, Elio Mizzan and Tom Nicks. This popular drive netted $115.00 for the restoration of the Museum. Thanks to all who participated.

Season Closing Event

The official closing of the curling season will take place this evening, April 4th. The club executive intends to make this a memorable evening. We will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a Chinese Buffet dinner. We will be paying tribute to four of our members who have curled in our club for fifty years. Those four are Reg Mcleod, Peter Purvis, Evans Harrison and Garry Allan. They and their wives will be the guests of the club at the dinner. At 7:00 p.m. we will have our Spring General Meeting which will include the election of officers. At 8:00 p.m. the final game to determine the Club Champion for this season will take place. All in all, the evening will wrap up the season in a grand style. We'll see you there.
