On Monday, November 26th, the Deep River Curling club invited sixteen members of the Petewawa club to a home-and-home event. Since the Petewawa club has no clubhouse all the activity took place in the Deep River club.
It was Deep River against Petewawa on four sheets of ice in the morning. Despite having played only on arena ice since the beginning of the season the Petewawa players quickly found their footing and gave the Deep River squads strong competition in all instances. In fact, the Petewawa teams came out on top in several of the games. In the afternoon the club players were mixed with some skips from Deep River and others from Petewawa. Again the games were close run matches.
There were no prizes and no record kept of the scores. It was all for fun and everyone had a great time. The Deep River club hopes to have the Petewawa club back for another round of games early in the New Year.
On Wednesday there was a Low Cup competition in Arnprior. Deep River sent two teams. The first team with Pat Kelly as skip along with Ken Deugau, Pat Binder and Dave Spenser lost both their matches against Renfrew. Evens Harrison skipped the second Deep River team with Bob Burton, Gerry Taelon and Charles Van Wagner. They too played the two Renfrew teams winning one game and losing the other. The next Low Cup games will be on December 6th in Eganville and Cobden. There will be no Low Cup games on December 13th.
With a month's activities behind them the Monday and Thursday evening curlers have a mixed bag of wins and losses. No one has won all his games.
The Monday Night league has only met four times. Bob Burton has three victories as has Jeff Olfert. Ron Grozelle, Chris Moore, Don Taylor, Doug Connelly and Ken Deagau have each had two wins. Leo Buckley, Martin Chisolm, Paul Elliot, and Bernie Deabreu each had one win.
The Thursday Night League has met five times and, again, no one has wins across the board. Chris Moore, Malcolm James, Bernie Deabreu, Don Tennant and Leo Buckley each posted three wins. Ron Grozelle, Don Taylor and Ken Deugau posted two wins each. Don Ross and Paul Elliot had each a win. Doug Connelly is seeking his first win.
Play in both leagues continues through December.
On Thursday, November 30th, the club said a large Thank You to the many volunteers that helped with putting ice in the club for another season. As several of you will recall, the making of ice in the Deep River Curling Club this year was not an easy task. The task, however, was successfully done and we have some very fine ice. The Club's thank you was a Chinese dinner served at the club. As with last year the fare was delicious and ample. Everyone had a great time.
On Friday evening the social curling will be focusing on an Italian night with Tiramisu, Cheeses, Pizza Sticks. Come one, come all. Curl for six ends. Then enjoy a drink and some snacks.
