2005 Deep River Curling Club Championship: James Gang get Robbed by Buckley's Boys
The Deep River Curling club championship came to a dramatic conclusion
on Wednesday March 30th - the annual championship competition is hotly
contested each year, at the very end of the season. This year the 8
teams entered were divided into two pools - each pool played a round
robin with the top team getting a bye to the playoff semi-final and the
2 and 3rd place finishers crossing over and playing a quarter final
match against the opposite pool. In the first Quarter final matches Ron
Grozelle's team and Yoshio Imahori's squads prevailed setting up the
semi final games. In one semi the James - team rolled over Imahori's
squad in 6 ends. In the other semi Buckley defeated Grozelle which set
up the Buckley-James final.
The final game was fairly open and back and forth for the first 7 ends
with Buckley holding a 4-3 lead in the eight end but James had the
hammer. On his last rock Buckley narrowly skinned a guard and eliminated
a James counter leaving James a delicate draw to the full four foot
around a tight guard. James coolly drew in to score one an tie the game
up - this set up an extra end. The extra end was so different form the
rest of the game. Jame's lead, Ian Bainbridge threw a perfect guard and
the Buckley's lead Bill baker drew around to the top eight - Bainbridge
drew around this to tee line, Baker corner froze that. The seconds,
Terry Mitchell for James and Bob Burton for Buckley exchanged draw/tap
freezes and before you knew it there 4 James counters in the four foot.
The thirds, Kevin Mccrimmon for James, tried to add a guard that didn't
cover then Buckley third Chris Knight on his last rock tipped one of his
own stones at the side of the four foot onto the button to lie shot in
the middle of 5 opposition rocks on the four foot. James missed a tap on
his first rock, Buckley guarded and then James had a relatively short
tap back to try and nudge one of his rocks onto the button which would
have left Buckley no shot. unfortunately his rock hung straight and he
missed the tap leaving Buckley with a count of one and the title by a
margin of 5 to 4.
