This coming Saturday, February 10th, the Curling Club will sponsor the Curl for Cancer fun spiel. Sixteen teams are expected to participate in two draws with two games each. Everyone will be a winner just by being there. The games are for fun and the proceeds are for a very worthy cause. So, if you are not coming out to curl you should come out to watch.
On the weekend of February 16th, 17th, and 18th the club will be having it's Deep River Invitational Bonspiel. Clubs from all over the Ottawa Valley and beyond will be sending teams to compete here. There will be plenty of good curlers in town and some very good matches going on at the club. Make plans to catch some of the games. In preparation for the spiel the rinks will be flooded on the 14th and 15th.
The Monday and Thursday night leagues continue to roar along with some very good games being played. Of particular note was a game played on February 1st between Ken Deugau and Ron Grozelle. By the end of the 6th end Ken was trailing by six points. Then in the 7th end Ken managed to score seven points and the score was suddenly 8 - 7 in Ken's favour. But Ron fought back in the 8th end and as the game drew to a close Ron had three rocks counting. Then Ken slid one in close to the button and cut Ron's point count to one. It looked like the game would end in a tie with the game to be decided by skip rocks. Finally, with his last rock, Ron did a raised takeout of the offending Deugau rock to get back his full three points and a clear win. The final score of the game was 10 - 8 in favour of Ron Grozelle.
Friday night social curling continues with the next gathering being on February 9th. Curling will start at 7.30pm. It is not too late to discover curling for yourself. Beginners who have never curled before are very welcome. The club has made a special fee of $6.00 for Friday night curling. People just have to bring clean in-door running shoes. We will supply the rocks and the brooms. The board at the Club says the theme for this Friday is Chocolate. Who knows? There may be cookies and cake for after curling. Make plans to come out on Friday evening.
