Chris Moore and is wife Jan organized the annual Boxing Day Fun Spiel this year. This event, which has run for several years, is an opportunity for anyone in town to try out the sport of Curling. It is also a good opportunity for those with visitors to show off the club. There were sufficient people for two draws, two games in the morning and two in the afternoon. Jan Moore made a hearty lunch of hot chili, which warmed everyone up after the morning games. At the end of the spiel everyone was invited to select a prize beginning with the team with the best score. The prizes had, in fact, been the entry fees each player had brought; a Christmas wrapped gift of around $10.

The Mattawa Curling club held its annual Bonspiel this past weekend, January 5-7. This is an event that the Deep River Club has supported for many years. This year Deep River sent three teams. The first team was made up of Chris Knight, Bob Burton, Chris Knight, Roland Kelly and Jeff Barker (who has retired from Sheridan Park and now lives in Sudbury.) Team 2 included Chris Moore, Joe Kasaboski, Jeff Olfert and Chris Trotter. The third team had Bernie Deabreu, Martin Chisholm, Ed Mutterback and Yoshie Imahori. The curling started on Friday evening and continued until Sunday afternoon. In the end the 'A' division was won by Artte Trudel in first place and Dennis Jambon in second. Both the 'A' winners were Mattawa teams. Jeff Brown of North Bay won the 'B' division with Gary Lecell of Mattawa coming second. Bernie Deabreu won a close match against Chris Knight to take the 'C' division with Chris Knight coming second.
A senior mini-spiel is being planned for Friday, January 19th. Lyall Smith has posted a sign-up sheet on the Bulletin board in the main lounge at the Club and will make up eight teams from those who sign up.
The next Friday night social curling will be on January 12th. The theme that evening will be Mardi Gras. Come out and celebrate Fat Tuesday and discover curling for yourself. To encourage more curlers to come out, the club has made a special fee of $6.00 for Friday night curling starting in the New Year. People just have to bring clean in-door running shoes. Make plans to come out on Friday evening.
The Regional Playdowns will be played at the Deep River Club next Saturday and Sunday, January 13th and 14th. Three female teams and six male teams have been entered from various clubs around the Ottawa Valley including our Deep River club. The winners will move on to the next level in the Provincial Curling Playdowns. Everyone is welcome to come, cheer on our entries and watch some excellent curling.
