Return of the Photos of the Curling and Squash Club Presidents

After an absence of a few years, the black and white portrait photos of the club presidents are now again displayed in the clubhouse bar-lounge area. This starts with Fred Gilbert (1950-51), Fred Bainbridge (1951-52), Stan Whittaker (1952-53) and Tom Morrison (1953-54) continuing up to Bill Shorter (1987-88). There are plans by the club executive to fill the missing 1988 to 2005 presidential photos.

While visitors and club members may like to get a feel of past Deep River history represented in these images, it is also an opportunity to admire the artistry of chief executive portrait photography ranging over almost 50 years. The photos are also viewable on the club website at http://lachlan.bluehaze.com.au/drcsc/presidents/

Seniors Curling Delivery Clinic: Sunday 12th December

The Seniors' Curling Delivery Clinic on Sunday 12th December from 2 till around 3.30pm was well attended enough to comfortably fill two sheets of ice. In an initial introduction to the group, which included basic safety on the ice, Evans Harrison pressed home the point that the most appropriate curling delivery is that which gets the rock to where it was intended, with the minimum (preferably zero) level of pain and inconvenience to the player. If the currently in-fashion "sliding delivery" is found to be painful, the consequence of this philosophy can be to consider using another style of delivery. With instruction from Pat Kelly, Evans and Ruth Harrison, participants practiced "standing deliveries", followed by "pendulum deliveries" from the hack.

Final week of Tuesday and Thursday social squash and table-tennis nights for this year

Thursday 16th of December will be the last night of social squash and table-tennis for this year. These evenings will continue for next year starting Tuesday 13th of January at 7:00pm.

Weekly Curling Highlights: Tuesday Doubles: 7th December, 7.30pm: Ken Ahronson and Doug Connelly vs Janice and Peter Bunge

For those not familiar with Doubles Curling, this consists of two people per team where one team member throws the first four rocks while the other skips; and visa-versa for the last four rocks. There is very little sweeping (rocks are only allowed to be swept when past the far hog-line). This type of game forces development of accurate rock delivery and skipping skills.

Last Tuesday, Ken and Doug again showed their prowess as an awesome doubles-curling mincing machine. While the Bunges won the 4th end with a single point, Doug and Ken's scores following a moderately thorough geometric sequence 1,2,4,6 (with the 6th to 8th end scores not recorded on the scoreboard). Like Glaswegian Gentlemen-of-Murder of ye-olde-Scotland, Doug and Ken's politeness, courtesy and pleasant manner was of such note as to receive a special mention by their opposition. As per usual, there was the traditional curling end of games drinks at the club bar, where the winners buy the losers a round of their choice.

For queries about Tuesday night doubles curling, Ken Deugau can be contacted for more information including scheduling. (Tel: 584-1933 ; kendeugau@deepnet.cx). People signing up as spares for Tuesday night are also very welcome, as are regular players.
