As a result of the efforts of several members of the Deep River Curling Club, the Curl for Cancer fun spiel held on Saturday, February 11th was a success.
There were fourteen rinks participating. The spiel was organized into two draws and each team curled twice. The teams were made up of a combination of young and older curlers. Some of the curlers were well experienced. Others were new to the game. No one was concerned about winning or losing. Everyone was simply there to have a good time.
As well as having prizes for all participants the organizers, Jan and Chris Moore, had just under $3,000 for the Cancer Society for their research. That is a real sign of success.
On February 7th two Deep River teams went to the Low Cup matches in Eganville and Cobden.
Team 1 from Deep River was made up of Bob French, Chris Knight, Gerry Tallon and Bob Tapp. They were matched against the first Arnprior team and came away with a 6 - 6 tie. The second Deep River team was made up of Ken Deugau, Garry Allan, Martin James and John Logie. In their morning match against Arnprior 2 they came away with an 8 - 5 win.In the afternoon matches Team 1 lost to Cobden 3-5. Team 2 lost to Pembroke 5-8 in their afternoon game.
With four games yet to be played Renfrew is at the top of the standings with 237 ½ points closely followed by Arnprior 237 points. Pembroke is in third place with 231 ½ points. Deep River is fourth with 178 points and Cobden/Eganville is in last place with 157 points. The next game is in Arnprior on February 21st.
On the weekend of February 16th, 17th, and 18th in conjunction with the Deep River Winter Carnival the club will be hosting an Invitational Bonspiel. Clubs from all over the Ottawa Valley and beyond will be sending teams to compete here. There will be plenty of very good matches going on at the club. Make plans to catch some of the games.
Because of the Bonspiel which starts on Friday night there will be no Friday night social curling this week. Keep us in mind for February 23rd.
