During the late draw on Thursday morning (8th March 2007) the team of Don Morrison scored an 8-ender. Don's team is pictured above. Clockwise from back left: Don Morrison, Ken Wright, John Murphy and Dave Spencer. Congratulations, Don.
In recent weeks the ice at the Curling Club has become increasingly challenging. Negative ice, particularly on rinks 1 and 4, runs, vales and high spots have made for tricky curling. Just determining where to put the broom has been almost a loosing proposition.
This situation is not new to the Deep River curlers. The cause of the tricky curling is the heaving of the ice. The thing that is new this year is how late the heaving has occurred.
On Saturday, March 10th, Pat Kelly and his crew did a flood. The following day, March 11th, Ziggy, our ice maker, came to shave the ice and complete the levelling of the playing surface. The rinks should be okay for at least a couple of week and perhaps to the end of the season.
On Wednesday, March 14th, the Club will be hosting the Low Cup. Deep River will put in two teams as usual. The club looks forward to welcoming the teams from the other clubs in the Valley. There are only three Low Cup matches remain to be played this season.
On Friday, March 16th, the last of the Senior mini-spiels will be played. There has been one mini-spiel a month since November and every one of them have been supercharged with fun. Still, it seems that all good things come to an end. The curling will start at 10:00 on Friday morning. There will be a draw in the morning and another in the afternoon. For anyone interested, the sign-up sheet has been posted on the Seniors' bulletin board in the Club house. There are still places available. Come out and have one last, good spiel before the golfing starts.
Friday evening curling will continue for another two weeks. Even at this late date beginners who have never curled before are welcome to come and try out this fascinating sport. The club has made a special fee of $6.00 for Friday night curling. People just have to bring clean in-door running shoes. We will supply the rocks and the brooms. Come out and see what you've been missing.
