The club is sad to lose Shel Gibson, who was an enthusiastic long time member and past president from 1961 to 1962; and expresses its sympathy to his family. The photo below shows Shel in his official club president photo, which currently hangs in the bar lounge of the club.
With a combination of funds authorized by the club executive and an unsolicited anonymous donation, the club-house has a new front door. Windows to each the side of the door are a nice touch compared to the old design. It is now expected that time spent by club volunteers, of which much was used keeping the old door's temperamental lock mechanism working, can now concentrate on other voluntary initiatives. A major asset to the health of the club is that of members donating money and volunteering time to curling and squash initiatives, and building upkeep.
The Tuesday night doubles game between Janice and Peter Bunge vs Elio Mizzan and Gerry Tallon ended up in a draw of 8 to 8, including a four ender scored by the Bunge's and a three ender by Mizan and Tallon. In theory, such draws are impossible in doubles night curling, as ties are meant to be decided by extra ends until there is a winning score. However, the two teams unilaterally decided that the best place after the 8 end game was in the bar lounge; and so it came to be.
Last week's social curling was Fiesta Night that concentrated on skills events. Next Friday night's 7.30pm social curling will be back to the traditional 6 ends of curling followed by Chips and Dip. Friday night curlers may like to bring some of their favourite dips and chips.
There is now a women's social round robin squash group which play on Tuesday, Thursday at 10.30am and Sunday mornings at 10.00am. Beginners are welcomed. The squash begins with a series of drills appropriate for beginner and intermediate players and then go on to round robin games.
Squash can be a good way to keep fit during winter, is independent of the weather outside, and can be played at any time during the day and night. A squash-only membership at the Deep River Curling and Squash Club is $150 per (the entire) year or there is a $5 adult or $2.50 visitors fee.
Squash equipment (racquets, eye protection and balls) is generally available at Zellers, Walmart and Canadian Tire all year round in Pembroke; and from Canadian Tire in Deep River during Winter.
