Submission for the 27th December 2006 issue of the North Renfrew Times by Wayne Daley

Deep River sent two teams to the Low Cup competition in Pembroke on Wednesday, December 20th. The first, with Ken Deugau as skip, included Rae Kasaboski, Gerry Tallon and Charles van Wagner. Chris Knight skipped the second which included Bob Burton, Yoshio Imahori and John Davies.

The two Deep River teams took on the two teams from Pembroke. The first Deep River team lost five points in the first end and battled back to a winning score of 9 - 8. The second Deep River team lost to their Pembroke counterpart 3 -11 in the morning game and came back to take a win from the first Pembroke team in the afternoon game with a score of 9 - 7. The first Deep River team took on the second Pembroke team in the afternoon and won 7 - 3.

At the end of the day Deep River had won three games out of four and taking 31 points. Renfrew won the day with 36 points, defeating Cobden and Eganville 15-4 and 5-6 in the morning and 12-1 in the afternoon, with Cobden winning the other afternoon game 6-5. Renfrew now leads the standings.

The next Low Cup competition will be held in Renfrew on January 3rd.

With two months activities behind them, the Monday and Thursday evening curlers have a mixed bag of wins and losses. No one has won all his games.

The Monday Night league has now met seven times. Bob Burton, Jeff Olfert and Don Taylor each have four wins. Ron Grozelle, Chris Moore, Doug Connelly Leo Buckley and Martin Chisolm have each had three wins. Paul Elliot, Bernie Deabreu and Ken Degau each had two win. It seems clear that the teams are evenly matched. At this point in the season there is no clear indication which team will finish in the top spot.

The Thursday Night League has met eight times and, again, no one has wins across the board though the record of wins and losses shows a wider gap. Chris Moore, Ron Grozelle, Don Tennant and Leo Buckley each have five wins. Don Taylor has posted four victories. Bernie Deabreu and Malcolm James have managed three wins apiece. Ken Deugau and Don Ross posted two wins each. Paul Elliot had a win. Doug Connelly is seeking his first win. There is still plenty of good curling still to be had in the evening leagues. Anything can happen.

The next Friday night social curling will be on January 5th. The theme that evening will be Garlic Night. Time to get out the garlic bread, the garlic biscuits and the garlic pickles. To encourage more curlers to come out the club has made a special fee of $6.00 for Friday night curling starting in the New Year. People just have to bring clean in-door running shoes. Make plans to come out on Friday evening and discover curling.
