Submission for the 28th March 2007 issue of the North Renfrew Times by Wayne Daley

Deep River Team Wins Super League.

The Upper Ottawa Valley Super League championship was won this year by a Deep River Team skipped by Chris Moore. The final game was played on March 6th at the Eganville Curling Club.

The league has been in operation for more than 25 years and is made up of 10 teams from various clubs in the Upper Ottawa Valley. The teams play a round robin format over 10 weeks. The top four teams make the playoffs.

This year Pembroke's Dave Trautrim rink finished first; Chris Read of Killaloe was 2nd; and, Chris Moore had a firm hold on 3rd. 4th place was a three way tie between Deep River's Leo Buckley, and two Pembroke teams skipped by Tim Aldridge and Paul Bourne. Tiebreakers games were required to decide who would finish in 4th place. Buckley defeated Aldridge and then Bourne defeated Buckley to take the 4th spot.

In the semi-finals Moore defeated Read. Bourne beat Trautrim. The final match was set up between Moore and Bourne. Moore's team, consisting of Malcolm James (3rd), Jeff Olfert (2nd) and Kevin McCrimmon (lead) won the final game and the league champion's trophy. The trophy will reside in the Deep River club for the next 12 months.

Club Financial Picture Improves

Most club members recall that last season the club's financial situation was in poor shape. In fact the executive had to make a special appeal to members to get enough money in the bank to pay the taxes and carry the club over the summer. To avoid a recurrence of this situation the membership fees were given a significant 20% increase last fall. Why this was required was explained to members and the response was excellent. The number of members has stayed the same as last year despite the increase in fees.

The club executive has continued to manage spending as judiciously as possible. At a meeting in March Club executive reviewed the current financial status of the club. They were pleased to note that the club has enough money to last over the summer and may even have a small capital reserve that can be used to make some upgrades in critical areas of the facility. In short, the Curling Club is solvent again. For a full update on the club's situation be sure to attend the Spring General Meeting on April 4th at 7PM.

Friday Night Curling

There is one more evening of Friday Night curling. That will take place on March 30th. Meet your friends for one last round of Friday night social curling before the season draws to a close.
