NEW BOOK

THE POWELLS IN ESSEX

AND THEIR LONDON ANCESTORS

by Richard Morris

The story of the philanthropists and antiquaries who lived in London, Hackney, Walthamstow, Loughton, Theydon Bois and Buckhurst Hill in the 18th and 19th centuries.

They contributed much to the arts, the poor and the sick, education and the church in Essex and nationally.

David Thomas Powell made delightful watercolour sketches of many churches and other buildings in Essex at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and which survive in the national collection at the British Library.

James Powell purchased the Whitefriars glassworks in 1834, which became renowned for the manufacture of stained glass and mosaics.

The Powells helped found St Luke's Hospital for poor lunatics, and were involved in its management for 200 years.

The first Baden Powell came to live in Loughton in 1772, and his great nephew, Nathanael, lived at Buckhurst Hill for over 50 years.

The book is in hard back and lavishly illustrated in colour and black and white.
