Trains relevant to Daresbury Laboratory

(travelling around the UK in intercity buses can be much cheaper than the train (possibly half to 1/10th the cost of trains)

To get from London to Daresbury:

From: Transport in Cheshire UK (April 2001)

  • Following written early September 2000

  • Summary: to get to Daresbury Laboratory from London, take the Virgin train from London Euston to Runcorn. Book in advance using TheTrainline.com to get good, reliable, cheap tickets. You can save over 100 pounds doing it this way. I lie not!!

  • Book in advance enough and you may get a return ticket for 20 UK pounds or less (go for the special offers section when it gives you the "standard" list of prices). Otherwise, a "super save return" costs around 45 UK pounds. A standard (economy) "open" return can be over 140 UK pounds - this is the one to avoid if you can. The "super save return" does allow you some flexibility to change train times providing you avoid "peak hour" - which has been extended to bizarre times.

  • Warning: If collecting tickets from London Euston, this can take ages standing in the queue - despite known laws of physics which would imply to the unwary that it should not. Best if you can get them delivered by post (preferred) or use the E-ticket system. Be informed that it helps if you input the correct information into the E-ticket machine for it to work (e.g., use the correct PIN/reference number you are provided). If this does not work - then join the queue to get it sorted (Aahhrrr!).

There are 4 train stations near Daresbury Laboratory that are worth Considering

  • The above recommendations about using TheTrainline.com apply if you are travelling around to other places.

    • Runcorn (Main Line Station with Taxi Cab rank) (is the one I get when travelling down South to Oxford or London. Though others in the lab also go from Warrington Bank Quay to get to London)
    • Runcorn East (Small station 45 minutes walk to Daresbury Laboratory station. Not always manned.)
    • Warrington Bank Quay (Main Line Station with Taxi Cab rank)
    • Warrington Central (next to the centre of Warrington)
    • (The station to get from London to Runcorn/Warrington is London Euston)
    • (It is generally best to get the train from Warrington Bank Quay if you wish to go to Glasgow or Edinburgh)

Following written early September 2000

The following is from a November 1997 guide of the "Cheshire County Council Transport Co-ordination: Your Guide to Bus Time Tables, Warrington, page 106. (On the front cover, it says: "Ring the Cheshire Busline, Warrington: Tel: 01925 444250. Mon-Fri 8am to 6pm. Sat, 9am to 1pm"). I am refering to this as the Cheshire Busline Website (in typical English fashion(?)) is pretty sparse on hard information: plus it has been well over a year since I went on a bus from Daresbury (bus stop opposite the Ring-O-Bells pub in Daresbury Village) to Warrington that actually had bus timetable sheets)..

Warrington - Chester Bus No C30 or X30 (via Darebsury Village, Runcorn, Frodsham and Helsby)

  • Warrington to Daresbury: A possibly unreliable summary is that (from 9am to 7pm - maybe longer but can be more irregular outside these hours) the bus leaves at 10 minutes past the hour from Warrington Bus Station; gets to Daresbury Village 16 minutes later (opposite the Ring-O-Bells) at 26 minutes past the hour; and arrives in Chester at 25 minutes past the next hour at the Chester Bus Exchange near the centre of Chester (inside the city walls). (The train station it outside the Chester city walls and a bit of a walk).

  • Daresbury to Warrington: A possibly unreliable summary is that (from 8:40am to 5:40pm - maybe longer but can be more irregular outside these hours) the bus leaves at 40 minutes past the hour from Chester Bus Exchange; gets to Daresbury Village (opposite the Ring-O-Bells) at 40 minutes past the hour; and arrives in Warrington Central Bus Station 16 minutes later, at 56 minutes past the "same" next hour at the Chester Bus Exchange near the centre of Chester (inside the city walls). (The train station it outside the Chester city walls and a bit of a walk).
