Welcome to Lachlan Cranswick's Personal Homepage in Melbourne, Australia

Summer 2000 at Daresbury Laboratory, Cheshire, England

The near futility of trying to use a digital camera to photograph zooming Swallows along the Bridgewater Canal - 5th August 2000

(a Casio 7000SX has around an 0.5 second delay from pressing the button to opening the shutter)

Why bother? As shown on "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" - profound are the ways of swallows!

1915 (Robert Graves)

"I'VE watched the Seasons passing slow, so slow,
In the fields between La Bassée and Bethune;
Primroses and the first warm day of Spring,
Red poppy floods of June,
August, and yellowing Autumn, so
To Winter nights knee-deep in mud or snow,
And you've been everything.

Dear, you've been everything that I most lack
In these soul-deadening trenches--pictures, books,
Music, the quiet of an English wood,
Beautiful comrade-looks,
The narrow, bouldered mountain-track,
The broad, full-bosomed ocean, green and black,
And Peace, and all that's good."

This England

"This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
 This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea...
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England."

 William Shakespeare, 1564-1616,
Richard II, Act 2, Scene 1
(JOHN OF GAUNT (Duke of Lancaster) speaks)
